A passage knob is for interior doors where you don’t need a lock—bedrooms, closets, hallways. It turns and latches but has no locking mechanism. Installation is straightforward because there’s no key cylinder or locking hardware to align.
A keyed entry set has a key cylinder on the outside and a locking mechanism on the inside. It’s what you use for front doors, back doors, and any exterior entry point. Installation takes more time because the lock cylinder has to be properly aligned, the key has to turn smoothly, and the locking mechanism has to engage correctly with the strike plate.
Privacy locks are a middle option—they lock from the inside with a push button or turn mechanism but don’t use a key. These are standard for bathrooms. They cost and install somewhere between passage knobs and keyed entry sets.
Usually yes, but older homes sometimes have non-standard measurements that require adaptation. Most modern door hardware is designed for a 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ backset, which is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the knob. Older homes might have different measurements.
