Pros And Cons Of Both Keys and Keyless Entries

Pros And Cons Of Both Keys and Keyless Entries

We have reached a day and age where the world's technology is rapidly growing, most of the time, changing our lives for the better. In the home security systems, electronic keyless entries have drastically increased our convenience and ease for entry, and security. This leads us to investigate the pros/cons of their potential.

Pros of Keyless Locks:

  • Installation: Believe it or not, it is quite simple for one of our expect technicians to install a keyless lock or electronic deadbolt. Typically, these can be placed in a matter of minutes, outfitting it to your door without any modifications.

  • Convenience: Imagine this, you are carrying an armful of groceries, like we are all guilty of, and instead of having to balance that gallon of milk in your already full arms while you tactfully attempt to insert your key into the cylinder (hopefully without dropping your keys) you can simple stick one of your fingers out and input your four digit code. BAM. Door unlocks and you can hurry inside to unload. The keypads are usually backlit or the touch screens are illuminated as well, making entering your home in the dark easier.

  • Ease of Access: Have family coming in from out of town? Kid forgot their key? House sitter watching your house while you are traveling? Simply provide the code without the stress of rushing home, or worrying about your hide-a-key being found. Most locks will hold up to 20 codes which you can delete as desired.

Cons of Keyless Locks:

  • Price: Yes, they are typically more expensive than your average mechanical locks – but to be honest, the value they provide justifies their price.

  • Style: Unfortunately, at this time we are limited to the amount of styles we can choose from.

  • Remembering codes/picking codes that aren't hard to pick: This can be tricky, you want to pick something easy to remember but isn't to easy to guess. (Hint: Save this in your phone's note or on a note in your wallet.)

  • Batteries: Yep, you have to remember to change the batteries. However, they do beep to provide an adequate amount of notice when the battery is running low.

Keyed Lock Pros:

  • Price: These locks can be extremely affordable, even at higher security level.

  • Style: The level of customization offered is very accommodating with these locks. From trims, colors, to knob/levers the options can be endless. (Maybe we should put this in the cons! After seeing all the options, you may be overwhelmed!)

  • Installation: Simple, quick and easy!

Keyed Lock Cons:

  • Getting locked out: Kids rushing to hang with their friends, stepping outside to let the dog out, one of those moments where you think you have your keys-but you don't. Next thing you know, the door is accidentally locked. These scenarios happen to the best of us and leave us stranded outside.

  • Hide-A-Key's/Spares: Having that spare key tucked in a Hide-A-Key, under a mat or in the mailbox may be a good idea, but what happens if someone who shouldn't finds it? They can easily make copies and/or break into your home. (Note: If this does happen, or you're worried someone has your key who shouldn't, you can call us to come rekey your lock!)

  • Carrying your keys around: Yep, they can be bulky and weigh your pockets/purse down.

Come talk to one of our technicians and we will gladly guide you to the lock that suites your needs.
