Why should I change the key to my house and how do I go about doing that?

Two great questions.

Stop and think for a second on how many people have a key to your place. Now, consider that the person prior to you likely had the same amount of keys made for their family/friends. While some surprises are nice, you don’t want someones random Aunt, who didn’t get the memo you moved, barging into your house. So what can you do?

Well, there are two options here. The easiest option would be to call a Locksmith (preferably us!) and have them rekey the lock. Rekeying is when we take the door cylinder, open up and fit it to a new key. This way the old key used will not work and you get to keep the current hardware on the door. Typically it will run you about 30% less than the cost of a whole new lock. One catch is, when we do this the current hardware must be in working order since we are not replacing any mechanical parts.

Now if the locks are not functioning right or the people prior had…eclectic taste for their decor and you cant wait to get it off the door- that’s when we suggest you get new hardware. In all seriousness, the hardware gives your house personality, you want it to look good! This is where I love directing people to the Emtek website. **Locksmith tip: Spray those locks (all crevices and the key hole) with WD-40 every time you change the smoke alarm batteries. This will keep them turning nice and smooth as well as increase the longevity of the key. We DO NOT recommend the use of Graphite as it actually binds the lock up over time and creates build up.
